A cow, some chicken, and ballet folklorico

On Thursday, June 13th, over 150 people gathered together to celebrate a year of success among students and parents and to recognize key community supporters. First Presbyterian Church in Azusa graciously hosted in event and parents decorated with centerpieces made during our craft class. The evening began with a ballet folklorico performance by a group of six students ages six to nine. These students are part of a group that meets every Friday for a dance class taught by a Homework House alumni, Shaila Salmeron.

Then the party really got started when the "Eat Mor Chikin Cow" came to visit and remind us how delicious "chikin" is! Chick-Fil-A in Azusa provided delicious boxed meals and Coca-Cola donated beverages.

During the recognition ceremony, Barbara Dickerson, Executive Director, honored essential partners from including Azusa City Library, APU Center for Academic Service-Learning Department, 5812 Coldwater Way, and Susan Downs. Several students were recognized for achievements in spelling, reading comprehension, mathematics, and character literacy. Adrian Greer, Teen Director, honored four young teen ladies for giving back to the Homework House through service as a volunteer tutor in our elementary program.

The evening ended with Alicia Ayala, Community Parent Lead, recognizing exemplary parent leaders that have demonstrated a commitment to serving Neighborhood Homework House and their larger community in Azusa. "Thank you Homework House for giving us this opportunity to be leaders in our community," expressed Alicia. The End-of-the-Year celebration is held to further empower our students and their families to see themselves as assets and celebrate their achievements.
